Please find update Mini-Bee hybrid VTOL multicopter project, which is currently in the TRL4 stage of development. This innovative aircraft is being developed by Technoplane SAS and a consortium of universities and is set to revolutionize air transportation.
The Mini-Bee project is being achieved under a dedicated lesser open source license, primarily for academic partners. This allows multiple actors, including academic, industrial, and individual participants, to collaborate in an open-innovation workflow. Tasks are managed by a coordinator, and project works are mainly shared on a public wiki.
The Mini-Bee hybrid VTOL multicopter is a 2PAX aircraft that can be used for several purposes, including as an ultra-light air ambulance. It is equipped with a single Rotax 915is engine and two Emrax 228 twin hexaphase high-voltage motors that are combined and cooled. The aircraft has sixty electric engines with propellers and a redressor and superconductor to regulate the power output of the electric motors, making it highly efficient.
The Mini-Bee has a composite tubular structure and anti-crash seats and structure, making it safe for passengers. It also has flight and engine monitoring and computerized flight controls for added safety. The aircraft's sensor integration includes various physical sensors, such as an accelerometer, magnetometer, and barometer.
Compared to small helicopters, the Mini-Bee is a cost-effective solution, with no rotor loss and the addition of a parachute for added security. The Mini-Bee can be loaded onto civilian aircraft cargo soutes, reducing logistic costs, and is easily mounted on tarmac.
The Mini-Bee project has been in development since 2015, with several stages completed, including basic mock-ups, detailed concept, scale models, and prototype testing. The project's key future actions for the TRL4 stage, starting in 2022, include continued collaboration with academics and industrials, detailed conception of structure and equipment, defining the flight control unit of 60 rotors, and testing the hybrid power generation with Emrax 228 and hexaphase redressor with superconductor.
In conclusion, the Mini-Bee hybrid VTOL multicopter project is an exciting innovation in air transportation that has the potential to transform the industry. With its efficient propulsion system, safety features, and sensor integration, the Mini-Bee is an excellent choice for short-range flights in urban areas, including as an ultra-light air ambulance. The project's open-source license and collaboration with academics and industrials ensure that it is continually developing and improving, paving the way for the future of air transportation.
Past Configuration 2021 / 22 : End of TRL3
Objective is now to produce a full-scale model of a quadcopter with real hybrid propulsion configuration. A display of a full scale 1/2 cockpit was achieved at Paris Air Show 2019.
Then we will build a full twin engine test configuration.

Presentation for academic projects
File:2020 09 Méca vol VTOL Estaca Laval ISPEB.pptx
The project is to develop the first hybrid VTOL aircraft.
It started in January 2015 with a first study on concepts and we ended with several mock-ups of what it should be like.
At the end of 2016, project entered TRL2 with selection of detailed concepts on the product.
2017 made the project gain credibility thanks to the universities and industrials joining the project.
And by summer 2017, the project entered TRL3 with a first scale model.
Objective is now to go on a first demonstrator by 2018 !
Challenge NAE
Project can be joined by academics through the Student Challenge NAE.
If interested in joining the project, feel free to contact us.
Lesser Open Source
- Project is developed under dedicated Lesser Open Source License.
- It allows multiple actors (academic, industrial, individuals) to collaborate in an open-innovation workflow. Project works are mainly shared here on a public wiki.
- Tasks are achieved with coordinator management.
- Private Tasks (without public disclosure) or product covered by other licenses or other intellectual property rights can be included within the project. Only interface works will be covered by the open source paragraph of the Lesser Open Source License.

Advancing Mini-Bee: Transition from TRL3 to TRL4 in Summer 2022
Mini-Bee's journey has been marked by significant advancements, and we're excited to share the progress as the project transitions from TRL3 to TRL4 in the summer of 2022. This marks a crucial phase in the development of this innovative hybrid VTOL multicopter, which has the potential to revolutionize air transportation.
Hybrid Configuration VTOL for 2PAX During the end of TRL3 in June 2022, Mini-Bee achieved a significant milestone with its hybrid configuration VTOL for 2PAX. This configuration includes:
1 Rotax 915is engine: Serving as a generator. 2 Emrax 268 twin: Enhancing propulsion. 60 electric engines with propellers: For efficient and sustainable power distribution. File:20220629 Mini-Bee v15.pdf
Innovative Aircraft with Multifaceted Applications The Mini-Bee hybrid VTOL multicopter is a versatile 2PAX aircraft designed for a variety of purposes, including its role as an ultra-light air ambulance. Key features include:
Efficient Power Generation: Powered by a single Rotax 915is engine and two Emrax 228 twin hexaphase high-voltage motors. Sixty Electric Engines: These engines, along with propellers and a redressor with superconductor, ensure optimal performance and efficiency. Safety: The aircraft boasts a composite tubular structure, anti-crash seats, and structural safety measures. Advanced Sensor Integration: Equipped with various physical sensors, including an accelerometer, magnetometer, and barometer. Cost-Effective: Mini-Bee offers cost-effective solutions with no rotor loss and the added security of a parachute. Logistically Friendly: It can be easily loaded onto civilian aircraft cargo holds, reducing logistical costs. The Mini-Bee project, which commenced in 2015, has seen several stages of development, including basic mock-ups, detailed concepts, scale models, and prototype testing. As it enters TRL4 in 2022, the project's focus will include continued collaboration with academic and industrial partners, detailed conception of the structure and equipment, defining the flight control unit of 60 rotors, and testing the hybrid power generation with Emrax 228 and hexaphase redressor with superconductor.
In conclusion, the Mini-Bee hybrid VTOL multicopter project represents a groundbreaking innovation in air transportation. With its efficient propulsion system, safety features, and sensor integration, Mini-Bee is poised to excel in short-range flights, including its vital role as an ultra-light air ambulance. The project's open-source license and collaborative efforts with academia and industry ensure that it continues to evolve and shape the future of air transportation.
